Very thin devices need to be more rugged; must flex somewhat ..

At least in the short term, Apple fans will fall for the good looking, mean and, of course, thin horses from the Cupertino stables. But, of late their so called innovations have little to do with value for users; it is only about innovating to ramp up profits, which is very different from what late Steve Jobs did. Some of the early breakthrough innovations in design from Apple were about thin devices with better display through major breakthroughs. Beyond a point, excessively thin devices will be far too delicate for the rough-and-tumble of a busy day for many. If devices are too thin, then a way must be found to make them rugged and capable of a certain degree of tolerance to bending. This means the next level of innovation, as far as the hardware goes, must be about rugged thin devices, that can flex somewhat. Some cutting-edge innovation is called for. That will depend on radically different combination of materials for body, electronics and display. Apple, now, is not really giving to its die-hard fans high value for money. The latest is the entrapment of ApplePay, which will make it very difficult for ApplePay users to migrate from a system for phone-based payments embedded in its firmware to other platforms. Given the history of Apple, it will make sure that any migration out of its 'ecosystem' will be terribly painful.

Feku the Fraudster on a Throne

Feku the fraudster sat on a throne Feku the fraudster pulled a fast one A masterstroke! A masterstroke! Feku the fraudster set everything afire Now, put out the fire, put out the fire Feku the fraudster laughed, yelled and cried A masterstroke! A masterstroke! Feku the fraudster laughed, yelled and cried All the fraudster’s cows and toadies Went around, in circles, in circles Couldn’t put out the engulfing fire Feku the fraudster’s tail was now afire And, all over a burning hell fire. Racist Attacks on Africans in India (near Delhi) - Reaction to an 'Expert Opinion'

One of my friends from Kenya referred to an article on the recent racist attacks on Africans in India by one Kul Bhushan who had been a newspaper editor in Kenya for three decades. In the article, the writer more or less advises the Indian authorities on combating prejudice and violence against Africans in India. This is my response to the views expressed in that article, which was shared by my friend. The article, sadly, is a shameful and disgusting way to 'advise' the Indian authorities. The writer is more worried about the negative economic impacts of the racial hate crimes in India than the real roots of these recurring racist crimes. That isn't surprising given the Indian capital's search for investment opportunities in Africa and the need for cordial relations to pursue those goals. The writer indirectly, without appearing to say it, makes statements that are rooted in the prevailing racial prejudices among many Indians against the blacks. Are  there really s...

‘Free Basics’ - Some Clarifications

In the discussions on my previous blog here and the posts on Facebook (as a note and posts) certain issues have cropped up: a) At least a few from outside India have misunderstood that some of those who are critical of ‘Free Basics’ are demanding totally free data. b) Some have questioned the ethics of criticising Facebook and its business from within the platform of Facebook itself. Implied is a position that it is somehow unethical and those who do not like facebook should opt out of it. c) I feel that there are quite a few important points in between all this that we need to discuss more explicitly. This note briefly touches on these. Right or Entitlement to Data Nobody in India has raised the demand (so far) for free access to data services or telecom facilities. It is Zuckerberg who is insisting on offering that! He is lobbying hard to induce 'poor Indians' into accepting what he is pushing as ‘free’ service, claiming that he is doing it to benefit the poor. ...
